Laser welding new technology can form the world's smallest weld

As industry seeks to produce even smaller and more complex plastic parts, new research is needed to make the welds in the plastic less than 10 microns. Until recently, the smallest laser weld width measurements could be 10 to 20 microns. However, this has reached the resolution limit of the infrared laser, it is impossible to achieve a smaller weld by controlling the size of laser focus spot alone. On June 15, 2015, foreign media reported the welding research institute in collaboration with Cambridge university developed a novel welding technique, a new technology combining the electron beam lithography and laser welding technology, used in thermoplastic materials, forming the world's smallest weld, brought its chips in smaller biological analysis and micro chemical reactor and the application of microelectronic products.

The advantages of laser welding allow it to be used in many industries of plastic connection. Laser welding is well suited for the manufacture of complex products, such as microfluidic devices, whose channel and structural resolution are usually less than 100 microns.
